LIFE + STYLE | CHERIE METCALFE

In the ninth edition of Life and Style, we sit down with CEO and Lunch Lady of Pepper and Me, Cherie Metcalfe, to talk business, fashion, and the upcoming holiday season. Read on as she shares her reflections on the year that's been, and the one that's ahead.

Q. How did the idea for your business first take shape?

The idea for Pepper and Me took shape after I had my daughter, Pepper. I am a Chef by trade, and with a baby it was really hard to find a way to get back into kitchens. I thought I would sell spices at the markets, salt blends and pastes, and from there the website was built and over the last ten years it's grown from there.

Q. What inspires your work - both in the kitchen and your day-to-day life?

I'm very inspired by travelling, and trying to find ways to bring these flavours to NZ in simple and easy to use blends, then provide people with the recipes and confidence on how to use them. I love to cook, and to honest, and I'm lucky I get to live my passion.

Q. How would you describe your personal style in a few words?

My personal style is pretty simple - I like comfortable shirts and I love a good skirt. Simple, classic, comfortable.

Q. What do you love about the Repertoire pieces you're wearing today?

I enjoy the comfort of both the Ella and the Christina Pant - they were dressy, but comfortable and easy to wear!

Q. What does your New Year style look like? Are you dressing up or are you all about the comfort?

New Years for me will be restaurant-hopping in Auckland, so something easy, comfortable and a bit fun... with a banger pair of sunnies!

Q. What accomplishment from this past year are you most proud of when you take a step back?

This year has been really epic for me, I had some big goals to smash. We self-published a book in-house that we are super proud of, and it has been an amazing success. I also wanted to nail public speaking and that's gone well for me this year. As well as running my first half marathon! It's been an amazing year.

Q. The New Year always feels like a clean slate. How do you personally like to welcome it in? Do you have any New Year hosting traditions?

I like to welcome the New Year with the best people, and the best food. And some time to relax after the insane Christmas season. No traditions for us though, just whatever is happening at the time.

Q. What's in-store for Pepper and Me for the year ahead?

This year for Pepper and Me it's our ten year anniversary! I really want to do some cool stuff to celebrate that. Another book is on the cards for sure as well. I'll decompress and make some big plans after the holiday!
