LIFE + STYLE | MAGGIE SEDDON
In our fifth edition of Life + Style, we chat to Interior Stylist Maggie Seddon from Mckenzie & Willis. We visited her in the beautiful Mount Maunganui store to chat about what inspires her - in the studio and beyond.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your journey - how did you find your way into interior styling?
I worked in fashion for many years, from Sydney to London, with brands like Whistles, Zambesi, Jigsaw, and Max in Auckland. While living in Connecticut, USA, I discovered Restoration Hardware in Greenwich — a brand known for creating sophisticated and luxurious atmospheres. I instantly fell in love with their aesthetic and philosophy and joined their team as an Interior Design Consultant, helping open a flagship store on Greenwich Avenue.
Seven years ago, I returned to New Zealand and joined The Design Depot team, which eventually became McKenzie & Willis. Again, I found myself surrounded by stunning interiors and a forward-thinking team. That move reignited my love for interiors.
Q. What fuels your creativity, both in your work and everyday life?
Nature, colour, and the way light moves through space inspire me daily. There's a constant dance between these elements, and I find endless creativity in observing how they interact, whether it’s in a home or just a fleeting moment outside. These simple yet powerful forces shape how I experience the world and influence every space I design.
Q. Working at McKenzie & Willis, you're surrounded by beautiful pieces and spaces daily. How has that shaped your style?
Our store in Mount Maunganui is a beautiful, inviting space. Being surrounded by well-crafted, mostly NZ-made furniture and decor has deepened my appreciation for quality and storytelling in design. It’s also shaped my values — I’m more passionate than ever about supporting local designers, artists, and makers.
Q. Do you find that your style in interiors influences your personal style?
Definitely. I’m drawn to natural fabrics and earthy, neutral palettes. My wardrobe, like my interiors, is largely understated — but I love adding a bold pop of colour or an unexpected twist. It’s that contrast that brings both to life.
Q. What do you love about the Repertoire outfits you selected for today?
I loved the layering potential, the textures, the flow of the fabrics, and the richness of colour. Repertoire pieces feel like wearable art — timeless, elegant, and expressive.

Q. Where do you begin designing a space – is it colour, layout, or a specific piece?
It always starts with the client. Every person who walks through the door brings a new story, and each project becomes a unique journey. Sometimes the starting point is colour, other times it’s a layout or a special piece — but it’s always led by the individual and their story.
Q. What item in-store is currently at the top of your wish list?
The Conform sheepskin recliner chair and matching footstool! I can picture it perfectly by the fire — ideal for curling up with a good book on these chilly evenings. I love its modern Swedish lines, even if it’s not NZ-made.
Q. When you're not working, where do you find joy or recharge?
Music, especially live concerts or festivals, brings me joy. So does a quiet walk on the beach or visiting my friend’s flower farm — Hands in the Dirt - grounds me. I also love cozy moments by the fire with a good book, cooking, and entertaining loved ones. Meaningful conversations shared around the table — that's where I truly recharge.
